Breast Cancer Diagnosis

A timely and precise diagnosis is the foundation of effective breast cancer treatment. At the Centre du Sein, we prioritise fast results without compromising accuracy, so you can move forward with a personalised care plan as quickly as possible.

Diagnostic Methods

At the Centre du Sein, we combine advanced imaging technology with specialist expertise to ensure every diagnosis is as accurate and comprehensive as possible. We understand that waiting for results can be stressful, so we aim to perform all tests promptly and deliver clear explanations every step of the way.

Mammography

  • What it is: A specialised X-ray of the breast that can detect tumours long before they are felt.
  • Why it matters: It’s considered the gold standard for early detection, especially for women over 40.
  • Our approach: We use digital mammography and, where appropriate, tomosynthesis (3D mammography) for a clearer and more detailed view of breast tissue, reducing false positives and unnecessary biopsies.

Ultrasound

  • What it is: A painless imaging technique using sound waves to create detailed pictures of breast tissue.
  • Why it matters: Ideal for evaluating lumps found on mammograms, and especially useful for women with dense breast tissue where mammography may be less sensitive.
  • Our approach: High-frequency breast ultrasound performed by experienced radiologists for precise lesion characterisation.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

  • What it is: A high-resolution, radiation-free imaging method using magnetic fields.
  • Why it matters: Particularly valuable for high-risk patients, those with BRCA mutations, or when other imaging results are inconclusive.
  • Our approach: Contrast-enhanced breast MRI for superior detection of small or multifocal cancers, and pre-surgical planning.

Biopsies

  • What it is: A procedure to remove a small tissue sample for microscopic examination.
  • Why it matters: Only a biopsy can confirm whether a suspicious area is cancerous.
  • Our approach: We offer several minimally invasive techniques:
  • Core needle biopsy – standard method for sampling breast tissue.
  • Vacuum-assisted biopsy – allows removal of larger tissue samples for greater accuracy.
  • Surgical (excisional) biopsy – performed when other methods are not conclusive.

Additional Imaging & Diagnostic Tools

  • Elastography – an ultrasound-based technique that assesses tissue stiffness to help differentiate between benign and malignant lesions.
  • Ductography – a special X-ray used when nipple discharge is present, to examine the milk ducts.

Lab & Genetic Testing

At the Centre du Sein, laboratory and genetic analyses are key components of accurate breast cancer diagnosis. They help determine the most effective treatment and assess inherited risk factors.

Hormone Receptor Testing (ER/PR)

  • What it is: Tests whether breast cancer cells have receptors for estrogen (ER) or progesterone (PR).

  • Why it matters: Hormone receptor-positive cancers often respond well to hormonal therapies, which can reduce recurrence risk.

  • Our approach: Conducted in certified laboratories with precise immunohistochemistry techniques to ensure reliable results.

HER2 Status

  • What it is: Determines whether cancer cells overexpress the HER2 protein.

  • Why it matters: HER2-positive cancers can be more aggressive, but targeted therapies are highly effective in these cases.

  • Our approach: Accurate HER2 testing informs personalised treatment strategies, including targeted drugs.

BRCA1 & BRCA2 Genetic Testing

  • What it is: Identifies mutations in BRCA genes, which significantly increase breast and ovarian cancer risk.

  • Why it matters: Positive results may influence surgical decisions, surveillance strategies, and family counselling.

  • Our approach: Genetic counselling is provided before and after testing to explain implications for patients and relatives.

Additional Biomarker Testing

  • Ki-67 proliferation index – helps assess tumour growth rate.

  • Oncotype DX / MammaPrint – molecular profiling to guide chemotherapy decisions.

Interdisciplinary Case Review

Every diagnosis at the Centre du Sein is carefully reviewed by our tumour board, a multidisciplinary team of specialists who collaborate to design the most effective treatment plan.

  • Who is involved: Breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, genetic counsellors, and specialised nurses.

  • How it works: Each case is presented with full imaging, biopsy results, and relevant medical history. The team discusses treatment options, potential clinical trials, and personalised care strategies.

  • Why it matters: This approach ensures that every patient benefits from multiple expert perspectives, minimising errors and maximising outcomes.

  • Patient involvement: We provide clear explanations and guidance, so patients understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and next steps.

FAQ

What happens during a core needle biopsy?

A core needle biopsy involves removing a small tissue sample from the suspicious area under local anesthesia. The sample is then analysed to determine if cancer is present and which type it is.

How long does it take to get results?

Biopsy results usually take 3–7 days, depending on the complexity of tests. Our team will contact you promptly to discuss next steps.

Do I need genetic testing?

Genetic testing is recommended if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer or other risk factors. It helps guide preventive strategies and treatment decisions.
