Spasticity is characterized by an involuntary increase in muscle tone, resulting in stiffness, muscle spasms, and sometimes uncontrolled movements. It is caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord and can significantly affect mobility, posture, and quality of life.
Spasticity may occur following:
When spasticity affects one or more muscle groups in a localized area, botulinum toxin injections may be recommended.
Injected directly into the affected muscles, botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signals responsible for excessive muscle contractions. This helps reduce stiffness and may improve comfort, mobility, personal care, and the use of orthotic devices.
The effects typically last for several months, after which the treatment can be repeated if needed.
For more severe or widespread spasticity that is not adequately controlled with oral medication, an intrathecal baclofen pump may be considered.
This surgically implanted device delivers baclofen directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. The dosage can be individually adjusted, providing effective symptom control while reducing the side effects commonly associated with oral treatment.
