However, there are also treatment-related consequences that can affect patients for many years, significantly impacting their quality of life. One of the most common and debilitating is arm lymphedema, a complication that can occur after the removal of axillary lymph nodes and causes swelling, a feeling of heaviness, pain, and functional limitations in the affected limb.
To reduce the risk of this feared complication, an innovative procedure for immediate lymphatic reconstruction was recently performed at the Centro Seno Ticino of the Clinica Sant’Anna in Sorengo by breast surgeon Dr. Damir De Monaco and Dr. Barbara Pompei, a specialist in plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery as well as microsurgery.
